Memorial Day and the Meaning of Home
Share page

This Memorial Day, take a moment to reflect on what makes a house a home—and how the freedoms we enjoy, including where we live, are rooted in sacrifice.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, many of us look forward to the unofficial start of summer—grilling with friends, swapping out the storm windows, or simply relaxing at home. But Memorial Day is about more than a long weekend. It's a time to reflect, to remember, and to appreciate what we often take for granted—starting with where we live.

In real estate, we spend a lot of time talking about homes: square footage, location, updates, resale value. But Memorial Day reminds me to step back and think about what home truly means. It’s more than the property lines and paperwork. Home is where we gather with loved ones. It’s where we raise families, host neighbors, and return to after a long day. It’s where we hang flags in the yard, watch the kids run barefoot through the grass, and wave to veterans in our community parades.

And none of that would be possible without the service and sacrifice of those who came before us.

The freedom we have to choose where we live—whether it's a home in Norwalk, an acreage in Warren County, or a condo near downtown—is something we shouldn’t take lightly. The ability to own property, build equity, and plant roots is part of the American Dream. And that dream was protected by generations of Americans who put service above self.

Whether you plan to spend this weekend working in the yard, hosting family, or quietly reflecting, I hope you’ll take a moment to appreciate the deeper meaning of the holiday. Not just the freedom to own a home—but the peace that allows us to enjoy it.

As a real estate professional here in Central Iowa, I feel privileged to help people find the place that becomes their own version of home. This weekend, I’m reminded why that matters.

Wishing you and your family a meaningful Memorial Day.
