Middlebrook Agrihood: Iowa’s First Agrihood Community
One of the most exciting developments in Central Iowa is Middlebrook Agrihood, located in Cumming, just south of West Des Moines and west of Norwalk. I’ve had the privilege of watching this project evolve from an initial concept into a thriving community, now home to residents, businesses, and ongoing construction.
What is an Agrihood?
An agrihood is a master-planned community that integrates agriculture into residential living, providing residents with access to fresh, locally grown food while fostering a strong connection to nature. Often referred to as "farm-to-table" living, agrihoods have gained popularity across the U.S.
I first heard about this concept in 2019 at a Builder and Developer Luncheon when Steve Bruere introduced his vision for Middlebrook. That day, he hosted Steve Nygren, the developer behind Serenbe, Georgia—one of the first agrihoods in the country. Their discussion about this innovative lifestyle sparked my fascination with agrihood communities.
Today, seeing Middlebrook come to life is truly exciting. I believe Middlebrook Agrihood is poised to become the premier residential development in Central Iowa. If you’re intrigued by the idea of living in an agrihood, I’d love to help you find your place in this one-of-a-kind community!
