It’s official! I’m thrilled to begin the next chapter in what has become the longest and most rewarding career of my life.
From Seamless Gutters to the Air Force
My first career lasted six years installing seamless gutters. I started that career early in high school. It was briefly interrupted by Air Force Basic Training at Lackland AFB and Radio Relay Repairman school at Keesler AFB. The rest of my time in the military was in the IA Air National Guard, which allowed me to continue working for the seamless gutter company and beyond.
A Career in Cablevision
In 1979, I began working for the local cablevision company and remained in the cablevision/telecommunications industry until 2001. It was then that I got my real estate license and joined Bob and Lois Siddens at Reliable Realty in Norwalk. A year later, all three of us went to Coldwell Banker in Des Moines, where I stayed for six years. In 2007, I became the managing broker for Darwin Smith Realty in Norwalk. I became an owner of the firm in 2008. In 2011, I became the sole owner. Kristy and I then purchased the EXIT Realty franchise for Warren County, and we started doing business as EXIT Realty North Star.
Closing One Chapter, Opening Another
EXIT Realty North Star is now closed, marking the end of an important chapter in this book I am writing with my life. The next chapter begins at the first of this year when we merged our office with EXIT Realty Capital City in Urbandale. We are now known as EXIT Realty and Associates, with offices in Urbandale and Grinnell.
Except for the name of our firm and the fact that we no longer have a physical office in Norwalk, nothing has changed. My contact information is still the same, so you don’t need to make any changes to reach me by email, text, or phone. I still start every day in Norwalk, primarily working from home, and I end up all over Central Iowa on most days.
Looking Ahead: Serving Through Real Estate
I am often asked if I am going to retire anytime soon, but I have no plans to. God gave me the gift of serving others, and 24 years ago, I chose to use real estate as the vehicle for doing that. I enjoy what I do, and because I have the best clients who have become friends over time, I don’t consider it work. As long as I can stay busy and enjoy what I do, I plan to continue on this path.
Thank you for being part of my journey—I look forward to continuing our connection and making new memories together. My goal is that the book of my life will end with a full life of helping others.

Back in May, I followed my own advice and washed our windows. Then a couple of weeks ago, we were getting ready to have guests over, and I decided to wash them again. I didn’t think they were that dirty—just a few streaks I’d notice
I am feeling sorry for all of the Foursquare houses out there. The readers of my newsletter chose the Victorian over the Foursquare 3 to 1 in last week’s March Madness: Home Edition matchup. The classic Foursquare house was built fr
