March Madness: Tudor vs. Arts & Crafts

The readers of this newsletter have spoken and the clear winner of last week’s March Madness: Home Edition was the Arts and Crafts style house with 60% of the votes.

This style of home first appeared in England around the 1860’s and were the opposite of the manufactured and ornate styles of the Victorian age. They were all about being handcrafted and personal, so you will see them using many architectural types. They became popular in the United States in the early 1900’s and many used the Craftsman or Bungalow type of architecture.

Common features of these homes are a low pitched roof with wide, open eaves, exposed beams inside the home, lots of built-ins, windows with small panes, large fireplaces that were the focal point of the open living space, wide-open floor plans, and a front porch.

Tudor style homes also originated in England, but much earlier, the late 1400’s and were popular through the mid 1500’s. This style became popular in the United States in the early 1900’s and are very easy to identify. They most often had steep pitched roofs with many gables, earth-colored exteriors of stucco or brick framed with half-timbers, tall windows and chimneys, and arched doorways.
